This Red Myrrh, also traditionally known as Smirna or Stone Incense, is a natural balsamic resin widely used in Orthodox Christian worship, particularly in Greece, the Balkans, Russia, and Asia Minor.
Despite its common name, this incense is not derived from the Commiphora tree (true biblical myrrh). Instead, it is the purified resin of the Styrax tree (Styrax benzoin), a natural aromatic substance valued for its rich fragrance and excellent burning qualities.
The resin is harvested from Styrax trees native to Southeast Asia and has been traded and used in Orthodox regions for centuries. Over time, it became especially beloved in Greek and Slavic Orthodox traditions, where it is burned either on its own or used as a base resin for traditional incense blends.
Red Smirna is easily recognized by its hard, stone-like pieces and deep reddish-brown color. When placed on hot charcoal, it releases a warm, sweet, vanilla-like aroma with balsamic notes, softer and more rounded than true myrrh. This makes it particularly suitable for extended services, home prayer, and contemplative use.
Our incense is 100% natural, free from synthetic fragrances or additives, and packed in sealed 20-gram bags to preserve freshness and aroma.
